The Coaming Welder is an automation assisted welder developed for making FCAW and GMAW fillet welds on coamings.. It consists of a frame that attaches to the coaming that will be welded and a carriage that sits upon the frame using it to move a torch around the coaming.
Weld power and wire are provided by the Lincoln Electric PowerWave S500 and the Lincoln Electric 25M wire feeder, respectively, both of which are controlled by the Coaming Welder’s process control system.
With the exception of weld carriage travel and rotation, and wire feed, all axes of motion are manually adjusted.
To facilitate rapid assembly, disassembly and ease of transport, the Coaming Welder is made up of a number of lightweight modules:

The handheld operator’s pendant is used to set and adjust the weld and sequence parameters. The pendant and the network of controller components in the Coaming Welder’s distributed control system makes up the process control system
The semi-automatic MIG and FCAW weld control system is modular in design to optimize weld process control while minimizing operator training. The system provides control of the weld carriage travel and all weld sequence parameters, which are easily set and adjustable from the operator’s pendant.
Weld process control is incorporated via several modules integrated into the weld system. A microprocessor, distributed I/O and master logic PCB are located within the carriage guard while the motion control system for the travel and rotation axes are directly integrated into those motors.
The Coaming Welder process control system requires no field calibration due to the use of stepper motors and precision circuit design. A motor only needs to be programmed for the travel or rotation axis as needed, for repair and replacement to be complete.

Uninterrupted movement of the torch around the coaming requires coordinated motion of two motorized axes, travel and rotation. These axes can be operated separately, or locked together so that motion of the one automatically follows motion of the other. The remaining axis listed below are manually adjusted by the operator as needed.
